The Great Wildlife and Birding Experience at Corbett arif December 18th

It was named in honor of Jim Corbett, a legendary hunter-turned-conservationist, best known for hunting man-eating tigers and leopards in the 1920s. Corbett Park is a popular retreat for wildlife and nature enthusiasts. It provides a great opportunity for viewing wildlife, especially the Tiger in its natural habitat. The mammals include the Tiger, Leopard, Elephant, 4 species of deer, Nilgai, Gharial, Wild Boar, Hedgehog, Common Musk Shrew, Flying Fox, Indian Pangolin, 3 species of Civets, Himalayan & Sloth Bear, Jackal & Red Fox, Smooth Indian Otter, etc. The park is very rich in reptiles including King Cobra. Nearly 600 species of birds dwell here such as Longtailed Nightjar, Jungle Owlet, Spot-bellied Owl, Bristled Grassbird, Black Francolin, Purple and crimson Sunbird, Hen Harrier, Changeable and mountain Hawk-Eagle, and many more, etc.

Just a short distance away from Corbett National Park lies the unassuming little town of Manila. To many, this would just be another quaint Himalayan settlement. However, this area is a birding paradise, with an abundance of raptors, pheasants, blackbirds, Mountain Scops Owl, and much more. In addition, the views here are almost unparalleled, as is the beautiful Manila Mata Temple.

Delhi to Vanghat

Drive to Corbett Park in the morning (6-7 hours from Delhi). Arrive at Vanghat in the afternoon. This will entail an easy walk of 2 km from Baluli Bridge. The last stretch of the river will be crossed on a bamboo raft.
Note: porters will carry your luggage, please travel light.

After lunch, walk around the riparian forest to look for wildlife and birds. You will have a chance to spend time on the machan.
Return to the resort.

Corbett Tiger Reserve has spectacular avifauna diversity. Great Hornbill, Pallas' Fish Eagle, Red-collared Falconet, etc. are some of the rare birds that are found in Corbett. More birds include Jungle Owlet, Scaly-bellied Woodpecker, Red-breasted Parakeet, Himalayan Swiftlet, Stork-billed and crested Kingfisher White-tailed & Siberian Rubythroat, etc.

Spend the morning and the afternoon in the surrounding open grasslands and the mixed forests of Vanghat.
The day would be filled with immersive wildlife experiences and nature exploration. Vanghat is known for its pristine surroundings and diverse flora and fauna?

Begin your day early, before sunrise. The mornings are the best time for wildlife sighting and birdwatching when animals are most active.

You will join a guided nature walk led by local naturalists from Vanghat. Explore the forested areas around the lodge, keeping an eye out for bird species like various bulbuls, pheasants, barbets, and if you're lucky, even large mammals like elephants, deer, and maybe even tigers.

Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast, during which you can discuss your morning observations with fellow wildlife enthusiasts.

After lunch, you will have a chance to scan the hillsides for Goral and look for the presence of tigers, leopards, elephants, otters, and more.

The river creeks will give you an opportunity to look for owls, dippers, forktails, and a lot more.
Ramganga offers an opportunity to spot various water birds, crocodiles, and possibly elephants and other animals that come to the river to drink.

If you're into wildlife photography, this time of day can provide great lighting conditions. Capture the beauty of the landscape and the creatures you encounter.

As darkness falls, gather for a leisurely dinner. Share stories of the day's sightings and experiences with other guests and the lodge's naturalists.

Keep in mind that wildlife encounters are never guaranteed, as animals can be elusive and unpredictable. It's essential to maintain a respectful distance from the animals and adhere to the guidance of the lodge's staff and naturalists.

On the last morning before departure from Vanghat, you can make the most of your time by engaging in a final nature-focused activity that allows you to savor the natural beauty and wildlife of the area.

Begin the day early with a final bird-watching session. Head out on a short nature walk around the lodge, focusing on observing and identifying bird species you may not have seen yet. The early morning hours offer a chance to spot different bird behaviors and listen to their songs.

If you were fortunate enough to spot certain wildlife species on previous days but missed capturing good photographs or observing specific behaviors, this could be your last chance to do so. Quietly observe any animals that might be visible from the lodge's vantage points or during a brief walk.

Spend some time capturing the natural beauty of the area through photography. Reflect on the incredible experiences you've had during your stay at Vanghat. Capture images of the landscape, flora, and any wildlife you encounter.

Enjoy a final breakfast at the lodge. This is a great opportunity to share your experiences with fellow travelers and the lodge's staff.

Walk back to Baluli Bridge. Absorb the sights, sounds, and scents of the jungle one last time. This quiet walk can be a peaceful way to say farewell to the natural world you've enjoyed during your visit.

Later check out from Vanghat and drive leisurely to Manila (2.5 hours + stopping time) stopping en route for birdwatching.

Arrive in Manila and check in at the lodge.

Lesser Florican Birding Tour arif August 5th

The Indian monsoon is a glorious time of year. Not only is it a time of rejuvenation and rebirth for many of India’s wild places, but it also has a unique effect on the birds and animals that call India home. Those that are shy and secretive most of the year become active during this season, spurred by their need to court and breed.

This tour well uses this time to target some of India’s shyer birds that are best seen when they are busy with their courtship displays.

The key species we will look for in this tour is the Lesser Florican. We often find this highly endangered member of the bustard family in grassland patches, especially those around farmland. Lesser Florican is a secretive bird that likes tall grass and becomes active during the monsoon. Its courtship display makes it easier to spot for birdwatchers and photographers.

Besides, we'll try to find other birds that thrive in this season such as Jungle and Rock Bush Quails, Pheasant-tailed and Bronze-winged Jacanas, and Indian Pitta.

The entire drive is through the forested area of Cheena Peak Range via Snow View Point and Kilbury. Govindghat is reached after a two-hour trip via Joshimath and the Alaknanda River? From here, our trekking journey begins.

Hundreds of Sikh pilgrims visit the shrine at Hemkund on any given day, and after getting out of our jeeps, we join this joyful mob ascending to Ghangaria. To reach to the hamlet of Pulna, the climbing mule path climbs past terraced fields and flora (3 km). The trail becomes slightly wilder and more forested from here, with sporadic views of snow-capped peaks. The 7 kilometers from Pulna to Bhyundar Village are an uphill trek with a modest altitude. The trail crosses the Laxman Ganga through a bridge that is elevated by enormous boulders not far from Bhyundar.

Day visit to Valley of Flowers

The trail is well chalked out and is a delightful ramble as it climbs gently through a coniferous forest, before descending to a bridge, and check-post that marks the official entry to the Valley of Flowers. Climbing up a rocky trail, with the forest behind us, the first flowers begin to appear.

Trekkers will be led into this Garden of Eden in the early morning after breakfast to explore various angles of the Bhyundar Valley. Packet lunches, hot beverage flasks, and other types of refreshments would also be provided. After a round of refreshments, the company would be taken back to our base camp at Gangharia before the end of the day.

Species may include Small Pratincole, Red Avadavat, and Red-naped Ibis, plus several others. Arid areas can be briefly checked for Ashy-crowned Sparrow-Lark. Stopping along the road at Mudumalai is not permitted. However, your guide knows where you can pull off the road to explore some excellent dry scrub habitat that is sure to add some new species to the list.

Spend the full day in Mudumalai. Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu is a tiger reserve with an area of 900 square km. In the dense moist deciduous forests of this area the upper canopy reaches heights of 30 m and valuable hardwoods like teak and rosewood are also to be found here. This is one of the finest habitats of the Asian Elephant. Drained by the Moyar River, its open forest makes it easy for visitors to see the Elephant and Gaur in natural surroundings. The park has good facilities for viewing wildlife, which include Gaur, Elephant, Sambar, Chital, and even the occasional Tiger or Leopard. Among other mammals are the Muntjac (or Barking Deer), Chevrotain (or Mouse Deer), Wild Boar, Indian Giant Squirrel, Slender Loris, Langurs and Macaques. The Park has about 250 species of birds, including the Malabar Trogon, Malabar Pied Hornbill, White-bellied Woodpecker, Indian Pitta, and Green Imperial Pigeon.

The town of Drass, in the Kargil district of Ladakh, is noted as possibly being the coldest inhabited place in India. However, it is also the best place to look for the elusive Himalayan Brown Bear!

Apart from the stunning scenery, there will be plenty of other wildlife to see as well. We should manage to see several good birds at the same time, such as Golden Eagle, Bearded Vulture, Chukar Partridge, Ibisbill, White-throated and Brown Dippers, Red-billed and Yellow-billed Choughs, Wallcreeper, Himalayan Rubythroat, Robin and Brown Accentors, Brandt’s Mountain Finch and more. Keen birders amongst us will be searching for the Long-billed Bush Warbler, a species only once reported since 1933!

Kargil to Drass (Brown Bear Tracking)

Start early morning from Kargil and drive to Drass. Later, we will walk along the Mushkow River. Here we try spotting the bears in the mountains/valleys around. On a good day you will be able to spot over 30 varieties of resident and migratory birds. This area has some great walks amidst blooming tulips and other wildflowers through the summer.

Lunch can be a picnic depending on the weather conditions and sightings. During the day, we will visit the nearby Shina villages towards Goshen or Pandrass. This valley also boasts of other wildlife such as marmots, Ibex, Foxes and Wolves.

Brown Bear Tracking

Early Start to the day at 5 am. Depending on the snow conditions, we will hike up or use ponies to reach the adjacent hillside, which provides a good vantage point to scan for bear movements in the area. Also, our spotters will accompany us and with their trained eyes and tracking skills help us get to find and see this magnificent ani sawmill.

Again, depending on sighting situations, the naturalist/spotters will decide for lunch as a picnic or back at Lodge. Morning and evening Brown Bear tracking. Depending on the sightings in our base valley, we can drive to other adjacent valleys such as Umba La (based on snow levels at that time of the year) Pandrass, Matayen, Shimsha Kharbu, Suru, or the apricot orchards in the beautiful village of Karkitchu.

Drass to Leh

The Melghat Tiger Reserve and Natural History Tour, Melghat Tiger Reserve is a wildlife sanctuary and tiger reserve located in the Amravati district of the state of Maharashtra, India. It covers an area of approximately 1,676 square kilometers and is home to a variety of flora and fauna.

The tiger reserve is known for its population of Bengal tigers, which are the main attraction for visitors. Apart from tigers, the reserve is also home to Indian leopards, Indian bison, sloth bears, Indian giant squirrels, and a variety of birds and reptiles.

Melghat Tiger Reserve is also known for its beautiful landscapes, with deep valleys, steep slopes, and high hills. The reserve is dotted with several water bodies, including the Tapti River, which provides a habitat for a variety of aquatic wildlife.

The best time to visit Melghat Tiger Reserve is between October and June when the weather is pleasant and the wildlife is more active. Visitors can enjoy wildlife safaris, nature walks, and bird watching, as well as interact with the local tribal communities that reside in the area.
