Overview
The Eastern Himalaya region is teeming with biodiversity and home to some of the larger protected areas of India. Namdapha and the Mishmi Hills are among the best places in Northeast India to spot the rare specialized forest birds of this region.
Namdapha National Park is a large protected area in Arunachal Pradesh It is a biodiversity hotspot of the Eastern Himalayas. The national park harbors the northernmost lowland evergreen rainforests in the world. Because of the variety in elevations and vegetation zones, the park is home to a great diversity of mammal and bird species.
The Mishmi Hills area of northeastern Arunachal Pradesh has become popular in recent years as travel restrictions in the state have eased. The area covers a large altitudinal range over a relatively short ground distance which means bird diversity is excellent. With many species being altitudinal migrants according to weather conditions it is also quite difficult to predict. The highlight species is the highly localized Rusty-throated Wren-Babbler which, after being described from one specimen collected in 1947, was not seen again until 2004. Other superb birds in this area include Blyth’s Tragopan, Sclater’s Monal, Himalayan Owl, Cachar Wedge-billed Babbler, Rusty-bellied, and Gould’s Shortwing, Dusky Thrush, Purple and Green Cochoa.
Kaziranga National Park, in the northeast Indian state of Assam, was established in order to protect the population of Indian Rhinoceros. A conservation success story, Kaziranga is now home to the largest population of Indian Rhinoceros, hosting two-thirds of the world’s population of this threatened species. It is also home to a high density of tigers, as well as other mammals such as Asian Elephant, Wild Water Buffalo, Swamp Deer, and many more. Kaziranga is also home to many bird species, including the Swamp Francolin, Pin-striped Tit-Babbler, and many more.
